Bio: Chris Chinnock is a Senior Archaeological Project Manager with MOLA, Northampton and the specialist analysing the skeletons and bones from the Whitehall Farm Post Roman and Early Anglo Saxon Cemeteries.
Summary: The lecture will outline and discuss the findings of a collaborative programme of geophysical survey and aerial drone survey carried out by MOLA and C.L.A.S.P on the regionally significant site of Borough Hill Hillfort, Daventry, Northamptonshire one of the largest of its type in the country. The survey identified that, despite later disturbance associated with the construction and demolition of radio towers during the 20th century, substantial archaeological remains had survived across the hilltop. The archaeological anomalies observed comprised of features associated with the hillfort construction including perimeter ditches, possible entrances and trackways. Additionally, evidence for settlement activity dated to the Iron Age and Roman periods was also identified. Funerary monuments thought to date to the Bronze Age and Roman periods were also identified in the geophysical data. The relevance of these findings will be explained and put into context.
In Memoriam – Francis Rodriques-Veglio:
Francis was a long-time volunteer and was instrumental in obtaining the necessary permission from landowners and for making the large-scale CLASP project and fieldwork possible at Bannaventa. He was also an extremely active metal detectorist and was Chairman and co-founder of the Norton Northamptonshire Portable Antiquities Search Team (NNPAST) for many years. He also very generously donated to CLASP his collection of the many finds he made in the Norton area , particularly of the Roman period, and these now form an important part of our collection and the Bannaventa coin assemblage in the CLASP archive. Francis was a kind and considerate man with a hugh passion for the past whose single mindedness and determination to disseminate as much as he could about his finds and locality are much to be admired as best practice. The metal detecting surveys at Bannaventa would have been far less insightful without his participation.
