Steelyard weight

This weight was used in a form of weighing scale. It would have hung from a bar with marks on it. The other end of the bar would have had a dish suspended from it or a hook. The item to be measured would have been hung from the hook or placed in the dish. As the scale was released, the steelyard weight was moved along the bar until it balanced, and the mark noted.

But what was being weighed? Was it money?

Another steelyard weight

It was important to be able to check any transaction to determine exact amounts and avoid giving short measure.

Found in the bath house.
